Silicone Implants
The enucleation of an eye is always a traumatic experience, perhaps more so for the
owners of our patients than for the animals themselves. In performing the surgery,
part of our responsibility is to create as good a postsurgical appearance as
possible. Cosmetics ARE important. Most enucleations performed on horses, dogs and
cats are done using the transpalpebral technique. To be esthetically successful,
this method requires the placement of some type of orbital implant. Otherwise, a
marked indentation or dimpling will occur. VOS has developed a line of silicone
implants. A conforming equine model is available for intraorbital use only. Because
of the unique configuration of the equine orbit, this implant is superior to simple
round models. The small animal implants are all spheres and are available in 12
sizes. Their dark color makes them suitable for either intraorbital
implantation following an enucleation or intrascleral implantation following the
evisceration of the globe.
Silicone Implants. In response to our
survey of ACVO conference attendees in 2003, V.O.S. now
carries small animal spherical silicone implants in glossy black in
sizes 14-22mm and glossy dark brown in 12mm, 14-22mm, 24mm, and
26mm. The three largest sizes are affordably priced at $20 each and
the rest are just $18. Our exclusive top hat design equine
space-filling orbital implant ($40, 2/$70) is uniquely contoured for
the horse’s orbit. If you do equine work, consider this easily
placed product next time you plan an enucleation.

Sphere Introducer
The Carter sphere introducer was described by
Brightman, et. al. in the 1977 article in the J.A.A.H.A. titled Intraocular
Prosthesis in the Dog. This procedure remains popular with many veterinary
ophthalmologists today. This stainless steel intrument simplifies holding silicone
balls and implanting them within the sclera.
